The Complete Guide to Emailing Folders

It’s a common scenario: you need to send a folder full of files via email. Unfortunately, most email services, including Gmail, don’t directly support attaching folders. They only allow individual file attachments. This means you’ll need a workaround to send that entire folder in one go.

Sending a Folder via Cloud Storage Link

The most efficient way to send a folder is by using cloud storage services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. This avoids file size limitations and keeps the recipient’s inbox clean.

Step 1: Upload the folder to your preferred cloud storage service.

Step 2: Once the folder is uploaded, get a shareable link. Ensure the link permissions are set appropriately (e.g., “Anyone with the link can view”).

Step 3: Compose a new email and paste the shareable link into the body of the email.

Step 4: Add a brief description of the folder’s contents and send the email.

Attaching a Zipped Folder (Desktop - Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo Mail)

If you prefer to send the folder directly as an attachment, you’ll need to compress it into a ZIP file first. This method works similarly across different email providers.

Step 1: Right-click on the folder you wish to send.

Step 2: Select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a ZIP archive of your folder in the same location. You can also use third-party compressors for more advanced options.

Step 3: Open your web browser and go to your email provider’s website (e.g., Gmail.com).

Step 4: Click the Compose button to start a new email.

Step 5: At the bottom of the new message window, click the Attach files icon (usually a paperclip).

Step 6: Locate and select the ZIP file you created.

Step 7: Once the ZIP file is attached, click the Send button.

Attaching a Zipped Folder (Android - Gmail)

To send a folder from your Android device, you’ll also need to compress it first.

Step 1: Locate the folder you want to send using a file manager app.

Step 2: Long-press on the folder to select it.

Step 3: Tap the three dots (menu icon) usually found at the top or bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Look for an option like Compress, Zip, or Create archive. Tap it to compress the folder into a ZIP file. If your device lacks this feature, consider a third-party file compression app.

Step 5: Open the Gmail app on your Android device and compose a new email.

Step 6: Tap the Attach icon (paperclip).

Step 7: Select Attach file.

Step 8: Navigate to the location of the ZIP file and select it.

Step 9: Once the ZIP file is attached, tap the Send button.

While email services don’t directly support folder attachments, these methods provide effective workarounds to share your files seamlessly.
