Hey everyone, I wanted to share a cool trick I discovered for quickly summarizing YouTube videos using Google’s Gemini AI. It’s a real-time saver, especially if you’re researching or trying to learn something new! Gemini integrates smoothly with YouTube, letting you skip lengthy viewings and get straight to the key points.
Method 1: Using the Gemini Web App
Here’s how to do it via the Gemini web app:
-
First, pop open your browser and go to https://gemini.google.com/app. You’ll want to sign in with your Google account.
-
Once you’re logged in, look for the gear icon or ‘Settings’ at the bottom left and click it.
- In the settings menu that appears, click on ‘Extensions’.
- On the Extensions page, make sure the YouTube extension is enabled. If it’s not, just toggle it on.
-
Now, open a new tab and find the YouTube video you want to summarize.
-
Copy the video’s URL from the address bar.
- Go back to Gemini, paste the URL into the prompt box, and type something like “summarize this video” before hitting enter.
- Gemini will then generate a summary of the video for you!
Method 2: Using Gemini on Android and iOS
You can also summarize YouTube videos using the Gemini app on your phone!
-
Open the Gemini app on your Android phone, or if you’re on iOS, use the Gemini chatbot within your browser or the Google app.
-
Tap on your profile picture, which should be at the top right corner.
-
Select ‘Extensions’ from the options.
-
Enable the YouTube extension if it’s not already turned on.
-
Find the YouTube video you want to summarize and copy its URL by using the “Share” button under the video.
-
Paste the video’s URL into Gemini and add a prompt like, “summarize this video”.
-
Gemini will then provide a text summary of the video right on your screen.
Things to keep in mind
Here are a few important things to remember:
- Generating summaries from YouTube videos is a feature available for both free and paid Gemini users.
- Always make sure you’re copying and pasting the full video URL into Gemini. Sometimes the video title appears instead, which won’t work for generating a summary.
- Gemini uses video transcripts or captions to create summaries. If a video lacks these, the chatbot won’t be able to generate a summary.
- Currently, Gemini supports summaries in languages like English, Korean, and Japanese, with more languages expected to be added in the future.
