Method 2: Manually Adding Perplexity AI as a Default Search Engine

If you prefer to manually configure things, here’s how you can set Perplexity AI as your default search engine:

  1. First, open your Chrome browser.
  2. Look at the top-right corner of your browser window, click the three dots – that’s your Chrome menu.
  3. In the dropdown, select Settings.
  4. On the settings page, find the menu on the left and click on Search engine. This is where you can tweak your search engine preferences.
  5. Next, click Manage search engines and site search. This shows you all the search engines currently available on your Chrome browser.
  6. You’ll notice there’s no direct option to add a new search engine in the top section. However, don’t fret! Scroll down to the Site search section and click the Add button.
  7. A dialog box will pop up. Fill in the details for the new search engine. In the Search engine field, enter Perplexity AI. For the Shortcut field, you could use something like perplexity.ai/search. The most important part is the URL with %s in place of query field. Here, you need to paste this: https://www.perplexity.ai/search?focus=internet&q=%s. This ensures your searches get routed to Perplexity AI properly.
  8. Once you’ve filled out the form, click Add to save your new search engine.
  9. Perplexity AI will now be listed under the ‘Site search’ list. To make it your default, click the three dots (More actions) next to it and choose Make default.
  10. Perplexity AI will move to the “Default search engines” list, meaning it’s now your default search engine.
  11. To test it out, type something in the address bar. Chrome should now be using Perplexity AI, giving you detailed, intelligent search results. You can also ask follow-up questions directly on the Perplexity AI page.

By setting Perplexity AI as your default search engine, you can get more insightful search results and answers.
