Set ChatGPT as your default search engine on Firefox

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a cool trick to make using ChatGPT even easier. Instead of heading to the website or using a separate app, you can set ChatGPT as your default search engine in Firefox! Here’s how to do it.

Method 1: Adding ChatGPT as a Search Engine

This method lets you directly integrate ChatGPT into your Firefox search bar.

  1. Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar, then hit Enter.

  1. You’ll see a warning page. Click “Accept the Risk and Continue” to proceed.

  1. In the search bar at the top, type browser.urlbar.update2.engineAliasRefresh. Make sure the value is set to “True”. If not, toggle the setting to true.

  1. Go to the Firefox homepage and click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner.

  1. Select “Settings” from the dropdown menu.

  1. In the left sidebar, click on “Search”.

  1. Scroll down to the “Search Shortcuts” section and click the “Add” button.

  1. A window will appear to add the search engine. Enter a name (like “ChatGPT”) in the “Name” field. Then, in the “URL” field, paste this: https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s&hints=search. Type @ChatGPT in the “Alias” field. Click “Add Engine”.

  1. Scroll back up to the “Default Search Engine” dropdown menu and select “ChatGPT”.

  1. Now, whenever you type a search query in the address bar, Firefox will use ChatGPT to provide the results.

Android Instructions

Here’s how to set it up on your Android phone:

  1. Open Firefox on Android and tap the three dots in the top right corner.
  2. Tap “Settings”.

  1. On the Settings page, tap “Search”.
  2. Tap “Default search engine”.

  1. Tap “+ Add search engine”.
  2. Enter ChatGPT in the Name field and https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s&hints=search in the URL field, then tap “Save”.

  1. On the “Default Search Engine” page, tap “ChatGPT” to set it as default.
  2. Now, Firefox on your Android device will use ChatGPT for all your searches!

Things to keep in mind

  • The steps are similar for other Chromium-based browsers such as Opera, Arc, and Brave.
  • You can use a browser extension like ChatGPT Search if the above methods don’t work for you.
  • If you face issues while using ChatGPT, verify the URL, and check your internet connection.
  • You can always switch back to a different search engine via the settings page.
