It’s not often you need to reset your browser, but if you’re running into weird issues, bugs, or just want to get back to the default settings, Microsoft Edge has a straightforward way to do it without having to uninstall anything. This is also handy if your account data isn’t syncing right or if some settings have gone haywire.
Method 1: Clearing all data including browsing history, passwords, and site data
Even after resetting your browser, your personal data is still around. To completely wipe everything your browser has stored, follow these steps:
-
First, open Edge. You can launch it from the desktop, the Start Menu, or the taskbar.
-
Next, in the top right corner, click the ellipsis icon (those three dots). Then, choose ‘Settings’ from the menu. This will open the browser settings in a new tab.
-
In the sidebar on the left, click on “Privacy, search, and services”.
-
On the right, find “Clear browsing data.” Click the “Choose what to clear” button on the right of the “Clear browsing data now” tile. This will open an overlay window.
-
In that window, click on the “Time range” dropdown and select “All time”.
-
Select all the checkboxes for the data you want to clear. When you’re ready, hit “Clear now.”
That’s it! All your personal data should now be gone from Edge.
Method 2: Resetting Edge from Settings
If you just need to reset the browser settings to their defaults, here’s how:
-
Start by opening Microsoft Edge from your desktop, the ‘Pinned apps’ in the Start Menu, or from the taskbar.
-
Then, click the ellipsis (three dots) in the top right of the Edge window and select “Settings.” This will open the settings in a new tab.
-
On the left-hand sidebar of the Settings window, click on “Reset settings”.
-
Now on the right side, click “Restore settings to their default values”. This will bring up a confirmation prompt.
-
Finally, click “Reset” to reset the browser settings.
This will reset your settings, but it won’t clear browsing history, passwords, or other personal data. If you need to wipe that, see the previous method.
If you’re having issues with Edge, a reset to default settings might just do the trick. If it doesn’t, try clearing all personal data too.
