Pasting text from the web into Word often brings along unwanted hyperlinks. These appear as underlined blue text, which can be annoying and mess up your formatting. Here are some ways to get rid of them.
Method 1: Removing all hyperlinks at once
If you’ve got a whole document filled with hyperlinks, you don’t have to delete each one manually. A quick keyboard shortcut can handle them all at once.
- Select everything in your document by hitting
Ctrl+A
.
- Now, press
Ctrl+Shift+F9
. This will zap all those hyperlinks and turn them into regular text.
Method 2: Adjusting paste options
Another way to avoid hyperlinks is to change how Word pastes content in the first place. This will prevent unwanted links from showing up when you copy and paste from other sources.
- After you’ve copied some text that includes hyperlinks, click the little arrow beneath the ‘Paste’ button on the toolbar.
- Select ‘Keep Text Only’ at the bottom of the menu. This ensures that only the text gets pasted, without any of the hyperlinks.
Method 3: Turning off automatic hyperlinks
Word often automatically turns text into hyperlinks as you type. If you want to disable this feature, here’s how.
- Click on the ‘File’ tab at the top-left of the Word window.
- From the sidebar, click on ‘Options’ to open the Word Options box.
- In the Word Options, click on ‘Proofing’ in the menu on the left.
- Next, click the ‘AutoCorrect Options…’ button.
- In the AutoCorrect box, select the ‘AutoFormat As You Type’ tab.
- In the ‘Replace as you type’ section, uncheck the box next to ‘Internet and network paths with hyperlinks’.
- Click ‘OK’ to close the AutoCorrect box, and then ‘OK’ again to close the Word Options box.
Now, Word won’t automatically make hyperlinks when you type.
Method 4: Removing a single hyperlink
If you just need to remove one specific hyperlink, here’s how:
- Right-click on the specific hyperlinked text you want to change.
- Select ‘Remove Hyperlink’ from the menu. This will turn the text into plain text.
By using these tips, you can keep your Word documents free from unwanted hyperlinks and keep your text looking exactly how you want it.
