Receiving Files via Bluetooth on Windows 11

Bluetooth is a great way to wirelessly share files between devices, no internet or cables needed. Here’s how you can receive files on your Windows 11 machine.

Before you Start

Make sure of these things first:

  • Bluetooth is turned on for both your Windows 11 PC and the device that’s sending the file (like a phone, another computer, or a tablet).
  • The two devices are very close to each other, ideally within about 10 meters (33 feet).
  • The sending device is set up to be found and ready to send files with Bluetooth.

Steps to Receive Files via Bluetooth

Method 1: Using the Settings App

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on your Windows 11 PC.
Press Windows + I to open Settings. Click on Bluetooth & devices on the left. Make sure the Bluetooth switch is toggled to On.

  2. Make sure your PC can be found by other devices.
Your PC is automatically discoverable when you have the Bluetooth settings page open. So, just keep the Bluetooth & devices window open for your computer to be visible to other devices.

  3. Open the Bluetooth File Transfer tool.
In Bluetooth & devices settings, scroll down and click Devices if it’s not already selected. Under Related settings, click on Send or receive files via Bluetooth.

  4. Get your PC ready to receive files.
The Bluetooth File Transfer window should pop up. Click on Receive files to get your PC ready for incoming files.

  5. Send the file from your other device.
On your sending device, find the file you want to send. Use the share option and choose Bluetooth as the way to share. Pick your Windows 11 PC from the list of devices that show up.

Note: The way you share files with Bluetooth can be a bit different on different devices. On most phones, you can tap on a Share icon, then pick Bluetooth, and finally select your PC.

  6. Accept and save the file that’s coming in.
Your Windows 11 PC will start receiving the file as soon as the transfer starts from the sending device. You’ll see a bar that shows how the transfer is coming along.

When the transfer is done, a Save the received file window will appear. Choose the folder where you want to save the file and click on Finish.

Method 2: Using the Bluetooth Icon in the System Tray

  1. Click on the Bluetooth icon, usually in the bottom-right corner of the screen in the system tray. If the icon is hidden, click the upward arrow to show all the icons.

  2. In the menu, click Receive a File. This will open the Bluetooth File Transfer window and get your PC ready to receive the files.

  3. Then follow steps 5 and 6 from Method 1 to finish transferring the file.

Troubleshooting Tips

If you have problems while transferring files, check these:

  • Are the Devices Paired?: You need to pair your devices before you can transfer. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices and then click on Add device. Follow the steps on the screen.
  • Is the Sending Device Visible?: The device sending the file should be set to discoverable. Usually, you can find an option labeled Discoverable in the Bluetooth settings of that device.
  • Try Restarting Bluetooth: Turning off Bluetooth on both devices and turning it back on can fix connection problems.
  • Check for Driver Updates: Old Bluetooth drivers can cause issues. Update them through Device Manager or get them from the device manufacturer.
  • Range Matters: Keep the devices close so the Bluetooth connection stays stable.
