Quoting Messages in Google Chat: A Quick Guide

Quoting specific messages in Google Chat is now pretty easy, thanks to a built-in feature! This beats using old workarounds and makes following conversations much clearer.

Method 1: Using the Built-in Quote Feature

This is the easiest and most direct method for quoting single messages in Google Chat.

  1. First, open your web browser and head over to chat.google.com.

  2. Next, pick the conversation from the left sidebar where you need to quote a message. This works whether your chat is full screen or in a pop-up.

  3. Find the message you want to quote. Hover your mouse over it, and some options will pop up on the right.

  4. Click the “Quote to Reply” button (it looks like an arrow) to add the message to your reply.

  5. The quoted message will show up in the text area. Type your reply underneath it.

  6. Hit Enter to send. Your reply will now include the quoted message for better context.

Method 2: Manual quoting using backticks

If you need to quote multiple messages, you can manually format them using backticks. It takes a bit more effort, but it’s helpful for referencing a bunch of different messages.

  1. Copy the first message you’d like to quote by double-clicking to select the text, right-clicking, and choosing ‘Copy’.

  2. In the message box, start a code block by typing three backticks: ```

  3. Paste the copied message after the backticks.

  4. Close the code block by adding three more backticks: ```

  5. Press Shift + Enter to start a new line and write your response below the quoted text.
