Pebble Smartwatches Return as Core Devices with Month-Long Battery Life

The iconic Pebble smartwatch is making a comeback under a new name, bringing its signature e-paper display and marathon battery life to a new generation of wearables. Core Devices, founded by original Pebble creator Eric Migicovsky, has unveiled two new smartwatches running an open-source version of the classic PebbleOS.

Core 2 Duo: A Modern Take on the Classic Pebble

The Core 2 Duo pays homage to the original Pebble design while incorporating some key upgrades:

  • 1.26-inch black and white e-paper display
  • 30-day battery life on a single charge
  • IPX8 water resistance rating
  • Built-in microphone and speaker
  • Step and sleep tracking
  • Polycarbonate frame with 22mm watch straps
  • Priced at $149

The Core 2 Duo aims to recreate the simplicity and reliability of the original Pebble watches. Its monochrome display and tactile buttons offer a distraction-free interface for checking notifications and tracking basic health metrics.

Core Time 2: Pebble Goes Full Color

For those wanting a more premium experience, the Core Time 2 brings some significant upgrades:

  • 1.5-inch color e-paper touchscreen display
  • 30-day battery life
  • Metal frame construction
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • Enhanced haptic feedback
  • Priced at $225

The Core Time 2 represents Migicovsky’s vision of an ideal Pebble watch, combining the long battery life of e-paper with a vibrant color display and modern smartwatch features.

Powered by Open-Source PebbleOS

Both new watches run on PebbleOS, which Google made open-source after acquiring Fitbit (who had previously purchased Pebble’s assets). This allows the Core devices to tap into the existing ecosystem of over 10,000 watch faces and apps created for original Pebble watches.

The open-source nature of PebbleOS also means tech-savvy users can potentially modify or create custom firmware for these watches.

Limited Availability

Core Devices is taking a cautious approach with their initial production run. The Core 2 Duo is limited to 10,000 units, while the exact number for the Core Time 2 hasn’t been disclosed. Both watches are available for pre-order exclusively through the company’s website, with the Core 2 Duo expected to ship in July 2025 and the Core Time 2 following in December.

A Focus on Battery Life

In an era where most smartwatches require daily charging, Core Devices’ focus on month-long battery life stands out. This extended battery life is made possible by the power-efficient e-paper displays and the optimized PebbleOS software.

Compatibility and Charging

Both new Core watches are compatible with Android and iOS smartphones. They use the standard Pebble charger, which is good news for those who might still have old Pebble accessories lying around.

The return of Pebble-inspired watches with Core Devices brings a unique option to the smartwatch market. For users who prioritize battery life and simplicity over cutting-edge features, these new watches offer a compelling alternative to mainstream offerings.
