Page Numbers in Google Docs: A Quick Guide

Adding page numbers to your Google Docs helps keep things organized and makes it much easier to navigate through your document, which is super handy when you have a longer paper or report. Here’s how you can do it.

Adding Page Numbers in Google Docs

  1. First things first, in your Google Doc, find the Insert tab at the top toolbar and give it a click.

  2. Next, hover over Page numbers in the dropdown menu, then pick one of the pre-set styles. If you want more control, select More options.

  3. In the Page numbers settings that pop up, decide where you want the numbers. Under Position, you can pick Header for the top of the page or Footer for the bottom.

  4. If you don’t want a page number on the very first page, just uncheck Show on first page. This is useful when you have a title page!

  5. Under Numbering, you can set where the numbering starts. Once you have it all set up, click Apply to add the page numbers to your doc.

Now you should have page numbers in your document exactly where you want them!

Changing the Page Number Alignment

By default, Google Docs sticks the page numbers on the top-right, but you can move them easily.

  1. Double-click on a page number (either in the header or footer) to enter the editing mode for that section.
  2. Highlight the page number, then use the alignment tools in the toolbar to put them where you need. You can pick Left align, Center align, Right align, or Justify. The blue highlight tells you which is currently selected.

In the above example the page number is aligned to the left. You can move numbers to the bottom too, just select Footer in the Page numbers dialog box.

Removing Page Numbers

If you don’t need page numbers anymore, or want to remove them, here’s how:

  1. Double click on the page number in either header or footer, to start editing the header or footer.
  2. Click on Options, which is located just below the header or footer.
  3. From the drop-down, click Remove header or Remove footer, wherever the page numbers are currently located.

With these steps, you should be able to manage page numbers without any hassle.
