Hey everyone, keeping your Google Docs organized can really boost your productivity. Instead of having a ton of documents scattered all over your Google Drive, creating folders directly within Google Docs is a great way to keep things tidy and easy to find.
Creating a new folder

Start by opening any existing Google Doc or creating a new one. At the top-left of your screen, next to the document title, you’ll see a folder icon. Go ahead and click that.

A dialog box will pop up. Look for the New Folder icon at the bottom of the window and click it to create a new folder.

Now, type in a name for your new folder in the text box. Make sure the name is relevant to the documents you plan to store there so you can quickly identify it later on.

Click the checkmark icon right beside the folder name field to confirm and create your folder in Google Drive.
That’s it! Your new folder is ready, and you can now start moving documents into it.
Moving documents into a folder
After making your folder, you can further enhance your organization by moving documents and creating sub-folders. This way, you can easily find your files and improve your efficiency.
Method 1: Using the Google Docs Interface
- To move the current doc into the folder you created, just click on the Move here button at the bottom of the dialog. This puts the doc directly into your folder in Google Drive.
Method 2: Using Google Drive

Click on the Open folder in a new tab icon to open your new folder in Google Drive in a new browser tab.

In Google Drive, you can add files or create sub-folders. To upload files, you can drag and drop them into the folder or click the New button at the top-left corner.

After clicking New, a dropdown will appear. Choose Folder to make a sub-folder, File upload to upload files, or Folder upload for uploading entire folders. You can also create new Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and other file types directly from this menu.
Continue adding files and subfolders to organize your documents. This will help you save time by streamlining the way you find files, without needing to switch between lots of tabs or windows.
