macOS Sequoia: Easy Window Management Tips

macOS Sequoia brings some really cool built-in features for managing your app windows. No need for extra apps anymore! Let’s check out how to get the most out of it.

Note: Make sure you’ve upgraded to macOS Sequoia to use these features!

Method 1: Tile windows by dragging them

Dragging windows to the edges or corners is arguably the quickest way to tile.

  1. Grab a window by its title bar and drag it to the left side of your screen. You’ll see a preview of where it will snap.

  2. Release the mouse, and boom! The window takes up the left half.

  3. Dragging to the right edge works the same way, snapping the window to the right half.

  4. Want to go full screen (but not actually full screen)? Drag the window to the top edge.

  5. To undo the tiling, just drag the window away from the edge, and it’ll go back to its original size.

  6. Pro tip: Hold down the Option key while dragging. You’ll get a preview of tile options as you move towards the edges, without needing to drag all the way.

  7. Corner Snapping! Drag a window right into a corner (without holding Option) to make it take up a quarter of the screen. For instance, top-left corner:

  8. Result! The window now fills the upper-left quarter.

Method 2: Use keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are awesome for precise window placement.

Keyboard shortcuts are a really fast way to tile and arrange windows.

  1. To maximize a window (fills the screen but keeps the menu bar and Dock visible), hit Fn + Ctrl + F.

  2. Want to center a window with some breathing room around it? Use Fn + Ctrl + C.

  3. Move a window to the left half of the screen? That’s Fn + Ctrl + Left Arrow.

  4. Right half? You guessed it: Fn + Ctrl + Right Arrow.

  5. Top half is Fn + Ctrl + Up Arrow, and bottom half is Fn + Ctrl + Down Arrow.

  6. To arrange several windows, press Fn + Ctrl + Shift along with the arrow keys. For example, using Fn + Ctrl + Shift + Left Arrow will arrange windows side-by-side.

  7. If you want to revert a window back to its original size and spot, press Fn + Ctrl + R.

Method 3: Use the green button or menu bar

The green button and the ‘Window’ menu are another way to get to tiling options.

The green button (top-left of the window) and the ‘Window’ menu in the menu bar also give you window tiling options.

  1. Hover over the green button. You’ll get a menu with ‘Move & Resize’ and ‘Fill & Arrange’ sections.

  2. Under ‘Move & Resize’, pick where you want the window: left, right, top, or bottom half. Note that top and bottom halves aren’t available when dragging apps.

  3. ‘Fill & Arrange’ lets you choose a layout for your active windows. If you don’t have enough windows open, you’ll just see empty spaces in the layout.

  4. You can also find these options in the ‘Window’ menu at the top.

  5. The ‘Window’ menu has quick options like ‘Fill’ (maximize) and ‘Center’.

  6. For more choices, check out the ‘Move & Resize’ submenu in the ‘Window’ menu. You’ll see options for halves, quarters, and different layouts.

Tip: Want your tiled windows to go edge-to-edge? Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock, and turn off “Tiled windows have margins” in the Windows section.

That’s it! Hope this helps you organize your workspace better with macOS Sequoia’s built-in tiling features.
