Install Google Chat Desktop App on Windows, Mac, and Linux

It can be a real pain to keep switching between browser tabs just to check your Google Chat. Good news – you can get a dedicated desktop app, making it way easier to keep up with your chats without the tab-switching hassle.

Install Google Chat as a desktop app

Here’s the easiest way to get Google Chat as a standalone desktop app, working with Chrome, Edge, or Safari, and all operating systems that support web apps:

  1. In your browser, go to chat.google.com and hit enter. This will take you to the Google Chat web app.

  1. Once loaded, look in your browser’s address bar for a plus sign icon (+). This is the install button. Click it!

  1. The Google Chat app will then launch in its own window, just like a regular app.

  1. You can now find and launch the app right from your desktop. Search for it via your system’s search bar, or make a shortcut for easier access.

Keep in mind, this app is essentially powered by your browser. So, if you remove the browser, the Google Chat app will also be removed from your system.
