Tired of constant pings from Google Chat in your Gmail? It can definitely break your focus. Here’s how to manage those notifications and reclaim your peace!
Method 1: Mute Notifications for Specific Chats or Rooms
If you’re only bothered by specific conversations, you can mute individual chats or rooms directly within Gmail. This allows you to stay informed about the important stuff without being bombarded by everything else.
- Open Gmail in your browser. Go to mail.google.com and log in.
- Find the chat or room you want to silence in the sidebar. Hover your mouse over the name, and you’ll see three vertical dots (a menu) appear. Click on it.
- In the dropdown menu, choose Turn off notifications. This will mute all alerts from that particular chat or room.
With that done, you should no longer get notifications from the chosen chat or room.
Method 2: Disable Google Chat Notifications Completely on Desktop
If you prefer a total break from Google Chat alerts in Gmail on your desktop, this is the way to go.
- In Gmail, click on your status indicator (it might say ‘Active’) in the upper right corner.
- From the dropdown, select Chat notification settings.
- A settings window will pop up. Uncheck the box next to Allow chat notifications to turn off all chat alerts.
- Click Done to save the changes.
Now, you’ll be free of all Google Chat notifications on your desktop Gmail.
Disable Email Notifications for Unread Messages
Even after turning off chat notifications, Gmail might still send you email alerts for unread messages or mentions. To stop these too:
- In the same Chat notification settings window, find the Email notifications area.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Email notifications and select Off.
- Click Done to save changes.
Disable Notification Sounds Only
Want to keep the visual cues but lose the sound? Here’s how:
- Go to the Chat notification settings as described earlier.
- In the Desktop notifications area, uncheck the box beside Play notification sounds.
- Click Done to save your preferences.
