How to Migrate Your Passwords from LastPass to 1Password

Switching password managers can seem daunting, but migrating from LastPass to 1Password is a straightforward process when you follow the right steps. This guide will walk you through exporting your data from LastPass and importing it into 1Password safely and efficiently.

Preparing for the Migration

Before beginning the migration process, take these important preparatory steps:

  1. Ensure you’re using a secure, private computer - not a public or shared device.
  2. Temporarily disable any backup software to prevent unencrypted data from being backed up.
  3. Make sure you have the latest versions of both LastPass and 1Password installed.
  4. Have your master passwords for both accounts ready.

Exporting Data from LastPass

There are two main methods to export your data from LastPass:

Using the LastPass Browser Extension

Step 1: Click the LastPass extension icon in your browser toolbar.

Step 2: Select “Account Options” from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Choose “Advanced” and then “Export”.

Step 4: Enter your LastPass master password when prompted.

Step 5: Select “LastPass CSV File” as the export format.

Step 6: Choose a secure location on your computer to save the exported CSV file.

Using the LastPass Website

Step 1: Log in to your LastPass account at lastpass.com.

Step 2: Navigate to “More Options” in the left sidebar.

Step 3: Click on “Advanced” and then “Export”.

Step 4: LastPass will send a verification email. Click the “Continue Export” link in that email.

Step 5: Back on the LastPass site, choose “Export” under Advanced Options.

Step 6: Enter your master password and save the CSV file to a secure location.

Importing Data into 1Password

Once you have your LastPass data exported, follow these steps to import it into 1Password:

Step 1: Open the 1Password desktop application and ensure you’re signed in.

Step 2: Click on your name or avatar in the top-right corner.

Step 3: Select “Import” from the dropdown menu.

Step 4: Choose “LastPass” as the source of your import.

Step 5: Select the vault where you want to import your data. For personal use, choose your “Private” vault.

Step 6: Locate and select the CSV file you exported from LastPass.

Step 7: Click “Import” to begin the process.

Step 8: Once complete, click “Show Imported Items” to review your transferred data.

Post-Migration Steps

After successfully importing your data:

  1. Verify that all your important passwords and secure notes have transferred correctly.
  2. Update any passwords that may have been compromised or are outdated.
  3. Delete the exported CSV file from your computer and empty your recycle bin.
  4. Consider uninstalling LastPass or at least removing the browser extension if you no longer plan to use it.

Handling Shared Folders

If you’re migrating from LastPass Families or Business, shared folders will be converted to vaults in 1Password. Only users with administrator privileges can import shared folders. After import, these folders won’t be available for other administrators to import again.

Mobile App Considerations

While the mobile apps for LastPass and 1Password don’t support direct export/import features, you can use their respective websites through a mobile browser to perform the migration. However, for the most secure and efficient process, it’s recommended to use a desktop computer.

Migrating your passwords from LastPass to 1Password doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these steps carefully, you can ensure your valuable data is transferred securely and completely. Remember to always prioritize security throughout the process, and you’ll be up and running with 1Password in no time.
