Hey everyone, the latest Chrome update includes some cool experimental AI features like tab organization, personalized themes, and even an upcoming writing assistant. If you’re eager to try these out, here’s how to enable and use them.
Enabling AI Features in Chrome
To get started with Chrome’s AI goodies, you’ll need to enable them in your browser’s settings and make sure your Chrome is updated to version M121 or newer.
Note: These AI features are currently rolling out slowly and are only available for users in the United States at the moment. Also, you need to be 18 or older, logged into your Google account, and have Sync turned on. They’re not available for enterprise and educational accounts just yet.
- Open Google Chrome and click on the three-dot menu icon, which is located in the top-right corner of your window.
- In the dropdown menu, select Settings to access Chrome’s settings page.
- Find the Experimental AI section within the settings.
- Click on the option that says Turn on Experimental AI features.
- Turn on the toggles for Tab Organizer and Create Themes with AI to enable them.
- Click the Relaunch button to restart Chrome and make the changes take effect.
With those AI features enabled, you can now check out how to use them below.
Creating Personalized Themes with AI
Chrome’s AI-powered themes let you tweak your browser’s appearance without any design know-how. Here’s how to create your own personalized theme:
- Open a new tab in Chrome and click the Customize Chrome button at the bottom-right of the page.
- In the customization menu, click the Change Theme button.
- Select the Create with AI option to begin making a theme using AI.
- Choose a theme subject from the list. For example, select “Aurora Borealis” for a theme featuring the Northern Lights.
- Under Add Optional Details, personalize your theme further by picking a style, mood, and color. The styles show thumbnail images for reference. For the color, you can choose a preset or a custom one using the color picker.
- Once you’ve set your preferences, click the Create button to generate the theme.
- Chrome’s AI will create several theme options. Browse through them.
- Click on the theme you like to apply it to your browser.
Now you can easily make your browsing experience feel more like your own with these AI themes.
Organizing Tabs with AI
If you’re like me and often end up with tons of tabs open, Chrome’s new Tab Organizer can be a real lifesaver. Here’s how it works:
Method 1: Using Tab Search
- Open Google Chrome on your computer and open the websites you want to organize.
- Click the Tab Search button. On Windows, it’s in the top-left corner; on Mac, it’s at the top-right corner.
- In the Tab Search menu, switch to the Organize tabs option.
- Click on Search for groups so the AI can analyze your tabs.
- The AI will then suggest a tab group based on your open tabs, one group at a time, along with a suggested name and emoji.
- You can edit the proposed name. To remove tabs, just hover over them and click Remove.
- Once you’re happy with the group, click the Create group button.
- The tabs will now be grouped, and you can find the group at the top-left of the browser window.
Method 2: Using the Context Menu
- Right-click on any open tab.
- Select Organize similar tabs from the context menu.
Or
- Click on the three-dot menu icon.
- Choose Organize tabs to start the tab organization process.
Using AI for tab organization makes it easy to manage your browsing, especially when you’re doing a lot at once.
Getting Writing Help on the Web
Coming soon, Chrome will have an AI writing assistant. This feature will help you write across the web. Here’s how to use it when it’s available:
- Right-click on any text field within a website while using Chrome (like a comment box, for example).
- Select Help me write from the context menu.
- Enter a short prompt or a few keywords that describe what you want to write. The AI will generate content for you based on that input.
- Adjust the length and tone of the generated content, or regenerate it if needed. When you like it, click Insert to add it to the text field.
These AI features in Chrome are making browsing smarter and more personal. With better ways to organize tabs, create themes, and even write, the experience should be much more efficient. And I’m excited to see what other enhancements Chrome has in store for the future.
