Chrome needs Digital Rights Management (DRM) enabled to play protected audio and video. If DRM is disabled, you might see errors when trying to access certain media. Enabling DRM in Chrome ensures you can view and listen to protected content without any issues.
Enable DRM in Chrome
You can turn on DRM in Chrome on both your computer and Android devices. Here’s how to do it on each.
On Desktop
- Start by opening Google Chrome on your desktop and click the three dots in the upper-right corner.
- From the menu, click on ‘Settings’. Alternatively, you can type
chrome://settings/content
into the address bar to go straight to the content settings.
- In the ‘Settings’ page, click ‘Privacy and Security’ on the left to find your privacy settings.
- Scroll down in ‘Privacy and security’ and click ‘Site settings’ to manage website permissions.
- At the bottom of the ‘Site settings’ page, click on ‘Additional content settings’ to expand it.
- Inside ‘Additional content settings’, select ‘Protected content IDs’ to change settings for protected content.
- In ‘Protected Content IDs’, make sure ‘Sites can play protected content’ is enabled under the ‘Default behavior’ section. If it is not selected, just click on the radio button to enable it.
Now, you’ve enabled DRM in Chrome on your desktop and can play protected media smoothly.
On Android
Turning on DRM in Chrome on Android is similar. Note that this isn’t an option for Chrome on iOS devices.
-
Open the Chrome app on your Android device and tap the three-dot menu icon, usually at the top-right.
-
From the dropdown menu, tap on ‘Settings’.
-
In ‘Settings’, scroll down and tap ‘Site settings’ to manage site permissions.
-
Scroll down and tap ‘Protected content’ under the ‘Media’ section to access DRM settings.
-
On the ‘Protected content’ screen, toggle the switch next to ‘Allowed’ to enable DRM. Once it’s on, you can play protected media content on your Android.
