FaceTime has been an Apple exclusive feature since 2010, becoming so popular that it’s almost used as a verb. Now, Apple is opening up FaceTime to other platforms. That means you can chat with friends and family on Android, Windows, or Linux devices, even though non-Apple users can’t initiate calls, only join through an invitation. This is a step towards more inclusivity which is great for everyone.
So, if you’re an Android user looking to connect with your iPhone-using friends, or an iPhone user trying to include your Android buddies, this guide is for you!
How FaceTime Works on Android (Without an App)
For years, Android folks have wanted in on FaceTime. It’s finally here, but not as a dedicated app. There’s a small catch, though. Android users can only join FaceTime calls through a web browser, typically Chrome, and need a link from an iPhone user.
Basically, Apple isn’t letting Android users start calls; they can only participate when invited. So, you will be depending on your iPhone-using friends. However, you do not need an Apple ID or any signup process to join a call.
How to Join a FaceTime Call on Android
To jump on a FaceTime call, you’ll need an invitation link. If the person who needs to invite you is not aware of how to create a link, refer them to the next section.
If you already have a link, here’s how you join:
- Tap the FaceTime link you received on your Android phone.
- The link will open in your default browser (like Chrome). Enter your name in the provided box and tap ‘Continue’. You don’t need an Apple account.
- The FaceTime site will ask for permission to use your microphone and camera. Tap ‘Allow’.
- Tap ‘Join’ to enter the call, and wait for the host to let you in.
- When you are done, you can tap ‘Leave’ at the top right corner to exit the call.
How to Create a FaceTime Link on iPhone
If you’re the iPhone user, here’s how to create a FaceTime link for your friends.
Note: This feature was in beta and rolled out with iOS 15 and macOS 12.
- Open the FaceTime app on your iPhone.
- Tap ‘Create Link’ to generate a FaceTime link.
- You can add a name to your call by tapping ‘Add Name’.
- Enter a suitable name and press ‘OK’.
- You can either choose to directly share the link over available apps or press ‘Copy’ to copy the link and share it however you like.
- Once shared, you’ll see the link under ‘UPCOMING’ in the FaceTime app. Tap it to start the call.
- Tap ‘Join’ in the top right corner to start the FaceTime call.
- You will receive a notification when someone requests to join your call; then you can accept or deny.
That’s it! FaceTime should be accessible for everyone, no matter their operating system.
