Enable or disable google chat in gmail

Google has rolled Google Chat right into Gmail, which means you can handle your emails and chats all in one place. It’s handy for some, but maybe you’d prefer a cleaner interface. Here’s the lowdown on how to turn Google Chat on or off, whether you’re on your phone or computer.

Enable or disable google chat on mobile

  1. First, fire up the Gmail app on your phone. Look for the menu icon, which is those three little lines, usually in the top left corner, and tap it.

  2. Scroll down a bit, and you’ll spot the “Settings” option. Tap that.

  3. If you use a few different Google accounts, pick the one you want to tweak.

  4. In the settings for that account, find the “Chat (early access)” option. There’s a switch next to it. Flick it on to enable chat, or off to disable it.

If you are enabling Google Chat:

  • You will need to restart the Gmail app for the changes to take effect. Tap “Close Gmail”, then reopen the app.
