Draw directly in iMessage

Want to spice up your iMessage conversations with some doodles? You can actually draw and share your creations right within the app. It’s a cool way to add a personal and creative touch to your messages, whether you’re an artist or just looking for some fun. Here’s how you can do it.

Method 1: Using Digital Touch

This is the most straightforward way to draw in iMessage, using the built-in Digital Touch feature.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone and select the conversation you want to send your drawing to. If you need to start a new conversation, that works too.

  2. Tap the ‘+’ icon, located at the bottom-left of your screen. This will open the app drawer (for iOS 17). If you’re using an earlier iOS version such as iOS 16, the app drawer might be below the message input; tap the app drawer icon to show it.

  1. Now, swipe up to see all available apps and tap on ‘Digital Touch.’ It’s the one with the heart icon and two fingers.

  1. A drawing canvas will pop up at the bottom. If you’d like a larger space to work with, swipe up to expand it to full screen. Choose your drawing color by selecting one of the colored dots.

  1. Start sketching! Use your finger to draw on the canvas. You can change colors mid-drawing. When you’re done, tap ‘Send’ to share your masterpiece.

  1. Your drawing will show up as a special message in the chat.

Digital Touch also has some cool animated effects triggered by gestures:

  • Tap: Tapping the canvas with one finger sends a colored burst. Try it with different colors.
  • Tap and hold with one finger: This sends a cool fireball animation.
  • Tap with two fingers: You’ll send a kiss animation.
  • Tap and hold with two fingers: Sends a heartbeat animation.
  • Tap and hold with two fingers, then drag down: This sends a broken heart animation.

You can also send handwritten messages within iMessage if you want another way to add a personal touch to your text messages.

Method 2: Drawing Together on Images (TikTok Pizza Trend)

Want to get in on the viral TikTok pizza trend? This involves using the markup tool in iMessage, which is a fun way to create collaborative drawings with friends. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Start by searching for a plain beige circle online and save it to your camera roll. This will serve as your pizza base.

  1. Open the iMessage conversation with your friend. Tap the ‘+’ button, then tap “Photos” in the app drawer.

  1. Select the pizza base image you saved. It will show up in the message box. Tap the image to open it for editing.

  1. Tap ‘Markup’ at the bottom-left of the image.

  1. Use the markup tools to draw on the image. You could add tomato sauce or cheese, for example. Tap ‘Save’ when you’re done.

  1. Tap ‘Done’ to exit editing mode.

  1. The edited image will appear in the message box. Tap ‘Send’ to share it with your friend.

  1. Now your friend can save the image, repeat the process, and add their own toppings. Usually, you take turns doing this to build a collaborative pizza drawing.
