Deleting your browser history doesn’t remove all traces of your online searches. Google keeps track of your activities across services like Search, YouTube, and Chrome to personalize your experience.
While this can be useful for revisiting websites or reopening tabs, it may not be ideal if you share your computer and value your privacy. Here’s how to remove search and browsing history and control what Google saves about you.
Method 1: Deleting Google Activity from Your Account
This is the most effective way to remove your search history, since it will remove the history from Google’s servers.
-
First, navigate to myactivity.google.com to view all of your Google activity.
-
On the My Activity page, you’ll see a timeline of your activity. This includes websites you’ve visited and searches you’ve done from any devices.
-
To remove individual items, click the three-dot menu next to the specific activity and select “Delete”.
-
To delete all activities, click on “Delete activity by” in the sidebar on the left.
-
In the pop-up, select “All time” for the time range you want to delete data from.
-
Check the boxes beside each service you want to clear activity from. Then, click “Next”.
-
Confirm by clicking “Delete” on the following screen.
-
You’ll get a confirmation message once your history is cleared.
Method 2: Clearing Search History in Your Browser
If you use a shared computer, you might want to clear your browser’s search history to prevent others from seeing what you’ve searched for. This method removes suggestions from your address bar.
Google Chrome
-
Open Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner.
-
Hover over “History”, then click “History” in the expanded menu. You can also press
Ctrl+H
.
-
On the History page, click “Clear browsing data” on the left sidebar.
-
In the popup, switch to the “Advanced” tab for more options.
-
Click the “Time range” dropdown and choose “All time” to delete all your data.
-
Make sure “Browsing history” and “Cookies and other site data” are checked, then click “Clear data.”
Mozilla Firefox
-
Open Firefox and click the three-line menu icon at the top-right.
-
Select “Options” from the dropdown.
-
In the Options tab, click “Privacy & Security” on the left-hand side.
-
Scroll down to the “History” section and click “Clear History”.
-
In the Clear Recent History window, choose “Everything” from the “Time range to clear” dropdown.
-
Check the boxes for the items you want to remove, then click “OK” to delete your history.
Using a shared computer? Regularly clear your search history or use incognito/private browsing mode to keep your searches private. These modes don’t save your browsing or search data.
