Black Desert Online Ending PS4 Support, Offers Free PS5 Upgrade

The popular MMORPG Black Desert Online is phasing out support for previous-generation consoles, but players won’t be left behind. Pearl Abyss, the game’s developer, has announced plans to shut down the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions while providing a free upgrade path to current-gen consoles.

End of an Era for PS4 Players

Black Desert Online launched on PS4 and Xbox One in 2019, bringing its expansive fantasy world to console players. However, as hardware limitations make it increasingly difficult to deliver new content smoothly on older systems, Pearl Abyss has made the decision to focus development efforts on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions of Black Desert Online will officially close during a maintenance period on June 26, 2025. This gives players several months to prepare for the transition and take advantage of the free upgrade offer.

Free Upgrade Process

Pearl Abyss is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for players:

Step 1: Ensure you have a PlayStation 5 console before the June 26 shutdown date.

Step 2: Download the PS5 version of Black Desert Online from the PlayStation Store (it will be available as a free download for existing PS4 players).

Step 3: Log in to the PS5 version using your existing account credentials.

Brian Choi, Black Desert Console Live Service Manager, reassures players: “Your account information and all entitlements to Black Desert will be fully accessible when you’re ready to transition to the PlayStation 5 version of your console.”

Data Preservation and Account Transfer

Players don’t need to worry about losing their hard-earned progress:

  • All character data will be safely stored and transferred.
  • Purchased items, currency, and other account entitlements will carry over.
  • Achievements and trophies earned on PS4 will be recognized on PS5.

Improved Experience on PS5

While the end of PS4 support may disappoint some players, the move to PS5 exclusivity promises several benefits:

  • Faster loading times thanks to the PS5’s SSD.
  • Improved graphics and draw distances.
  • More stable frame rates, especially in crowded areas.
  • Potential for larger-scale battles and events.

Why the Change?

Pearl Abyss cites hardware limitations as the primary reason for ending PS4 support. As Black Desert Online continues to evolve with new content updates, the aging hardware of previous-gen consoles struggles to keep up. By focusing development on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the team can push the boundaries of what’s possible in the game without being held back by older technology.

Timeline and Next Steps

  • Now - June 25, 2025: PS4 version remains playable
  • June 26, 2025: PS4 servers shut down during maintenance
  • June 26, 2025 onwards: PS5 version becomes the only supported console version

Players are encouraged to start the upgrade process before the June 26 deadline to ensure a seamless transition.

Black Desert Online’s move to current-gen exclusivity marks a significant shift for the MMORPG. While some players may need to upgrade their hardware, the free transfer process and improved gameplay experience on PS5 should make the transition worthwhile for dedicated adventurers.
