AI-Powered Paint on Windows 11 Gets a Major Usability Boost

Microsoft recently rolled out a new Windows 11 beta build to Windows Insiders, bringing significant improvements to the AI-powered Paint application. This update focuses on enhancing the accessibility of AI-driven features, making them more user-friendly.

The update, delivered through the Beta channel, introduces a Copilot menu, streamlining access to AI tools like Cocreator, Image Creator, Generative Erase, and Remove Background. This enhancement is available for users with Paint version 11.2412.271.0 or newer in the Beta and Release Preview channels.

Accessing the AI Features Through the Copilot Menu

The most effective way to use the AI features is through the dedicated Copilot menu, once you have the required version of Paint.

Checking for the Update and Accessing the Features

Step 1: Open the Microsoft Store app.

Step 2: Click on Library in the bottom left corner.

Step 3: Click on Get updates in the top right corner.

Step 4: If an update for Paint is available, it will be downloaded and installed. Once updated, launch Paint.

Step 5: Look for the Copilot icon or menu within the Paint interface. This may appear as a dedicated button or be integrated into the toolbar.

Step 6: Click the Copilot icon to reveal the AI-powered features such as Cocreator, Image Creator, Generative Erase, and Remove Background.

Paint’s Cocreator allows users to generate AI images utilizing DALL-E’s model. This feature has been around for a while now.

To utilize the AI-powered features effectively, you’ll need a Copilot+ PC equipped with an NPU capable of 40 TOPS for local processing. A Microsoft account is also required. Microsoft tracks prompts to filter content.

Last year, Windows 11’s Photos and Camera apps gained Copilot integration. The Photos app now features a Copilot plugin for creating slideshows and setting desktop backgrounds.

The update also includes general improvements and fixes, such as resolving a Settings crash issue. Known issues include slow File Explorer closing and incorrect enterprise-related settings appearing on personal devices.
