Adding Your Phone Number to iMessage on Mac

iMessage is super convenient, especially when you want to chat with other Apple folks without relying on third-party apps. One of its best perks is how smoothly it works across your Apple devices.

For instance, you can get all your iMessages sent to your phone number on your Mac, making things way easier than other messaging services. You won’t miss important updates or messages, even if your iPhone is out of reach or you need to avoid distractions.

It also streamlines your workflow because it’s easier to respond using a full-sized keyboard instead of typing on your phone.

The setup process has two main parts: First, ensure your phone number is selected for iMessage on your iPhone, then enable it on your Mac.

Adding Your Phone Number to iMessage Using iPhone

Adding your phone number using your iPhone is pretty simple. Just head to the settings and choose which phone number to use for sending and receiving iMessages.

First, open the Settings app from your home screen or app library.

Next, tap on ‘Messages’ from the list.

After that, tap on ‘Send & Receive’.

Then, select the phone number you want to receive messages on from the list. If you have multiple numbers, you can choose both. Once a number is selected, you’ll see a blue checkmark next to it.

If you’re using multiple numbers, you also have to choose the number you want to use to initiate conversations. You can receive messages on all numbers and email addresses associated with your account but only use one for starting new chats. You can select to start conversations either from your phone number or your Apple ID.

If your Mac is already logged in with your Apple ID, you’ll get a notification asking to add the phone number you just selected to iMessage. Just hit ‘Yes’ to start receiving messages on your Mac.

If your Mac isn’t signed into the same Apple ID, follow the steps in the next section.

If you are not signed in using your Apple ID for iMessage on the iPhone

From the ‘Messages’ screen, tap on ‘Use your Apple ID for iMessage’. This will display a popup on your screen.

If you wish to sign in with the Apple ID you are using on your iPhone, tap ‘Sign In’. If you prefer using a different Apple ID, tap ‘Use Other Apple ID’.

After signing in, choose the numbers you want to use, as described above, and move to your Mac.

Receiving iMessages on Your Mac

Adding your number to iMessage on your Mac is just as easy, if not easier, than on your iPhone. But before starting, make sure that you’re signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices. If not, check the previous section to do so.

First, open the Messages app from your Mac’s Launchpad or Dock.

Next, click on ‘Messages’ in the menu bar, then click ‘Preferences’. A new window will pop up.

Now, click the ‘iMessage’ tab, then check the box next to the phone number you want to use. Also, check the box for ‘Enable Messages in iCloud’.

If you are not signed in with your Apple ID

If you’re not signed in, enter your Apple ID information in the ‘iMessage’ tab, then click ‘Next’ to sign in and select the checkboxes.

Once signed in, you’ll start receiving your iMessages on your Mac.
