Applying a strikethrough in Google Docs lets you indicate text for deletion or revision without actually getting rid of it. While you won’t find a strikethrough button on the toolbar, you can easily do it using a keyboard shortcut or the Format menu.
Method 1: Using the keyboard shortcut
- Select the text you’d like to strikethrough by highlighting it within your Google Doc.
- Press
ALT + SHIFT + 5
on your keyboard. This instantly adds a line through the selected text.
The selected text will now have a line running through it, showing the strikethrough has been applied.
Method 2: Using the Format menu
- First, highlight the text you intend to strikethrough.
-
Go to the menu bar at the top and click on “Format”.
-
In the dropdown, hover over “Text,” then select “Strikethrough” from the list that appears.
The selected text will now display with a line through it, the same as when you use the keyboard shortcut.
To undo the strikethrough, highlight the text again and use ALT + SHIFT + 5
or go back to the Format menu and deselect “Strikethrough."
Strikethrough is a handy way to track changes and collaborate on documents without deleting any content. Whether you prefer the speed of a keyboard shortcut or working with menus, you can quickly apply and remove strikethrough formatting as you need it.
