Quick Guide to Strikethrough in Google Docs

Applying a strikethrough in Google Docs lets you indicate text for deletion or revision without actually getting rid of it. While you won’t find a strikethrough button on the toolbar, you can easily do it using a keyboard shortcut or the Format menu.

Method 1: Using the keyboard shortcut

  1. Select the text you’d like to strikethrough by highlighting it within your Google Doc.

Select text

  1. Press ALT + SHIFT + 5 on your keyboard. This instantly adds a line through the selected text.

The selected text will now have a line running through it, showing the strikethrough has been applied.

Method 2: Using the Format menu

  1. First, highlight the text you intend to strikethrough.

Highlight text

  1. Go to the menu bar at the top and click on “Format”.

  2. In the dropdown, hover over “Text,” then select “Strikethrough” from the list that appears.

The selected text will now display with a line through it, the same as when you use the keyboard shortcut.

To undo the strikethrough, highlight the text again and use ALT + SHIFT + 5 or go back to the Format menu and deselect “Strikethrough."

Strikethrough is a handy way to track changes and collaborate on documents without deleting any content. Whether you prefer the speed of a keyboard shortcut or working with menus, you can quickly apply and remove strikethrough formatting as you need it.
