Moving Chrome Passwords and Settings to Safari on Mac

Switching from Chrome to Safari on your Mac and want to bring your passwords, history, and bookmarks with you? It’s totally doable, and thankfully Safari makes it a breeze to import all that good stuff from Chrome. No need to manually re-enter everything!

  1. First, you’ll want to make sure Google Chrome is completely shut down on your Mac. This means all windows and tabs, including any private browsing sessions, need to be closed. To do this, simply right-click the Chrome icon in your dock and hit “Quit.”

  2. Now, fire up Safari on your Mac.

  3. With Safari open, go to the “File” menu in the top-left corner of your screen, right next to “Safari”.

  4. From the file menu, hover your mouse over “Import From” near the bottom. A sub-menu will pop up. Select “Google Chrome” from that menu.

  5. If chrome is still running, you won’t be able to select the import option, it’ll be greyed out. Double check all chrome windows and private tabs are closed, and try again.

  6. Once Chrome is totally closed, the import window will activate. You’ll see checkboxes to import your “Bookmarks”, “History”, and “Passwords”. Make sure all are ticked, especially “Passwords”, then click the “Import” button.

  7. Next, you’ll need to type in your Mac’s admin password to okay the password import. Hit “Allow,” or “Always Allow” if you don’t want to be asked again. If you skip this, you will only get your history and bookmarks, but your saved passwords won’t come over.

  8. And that’s it! Now you can start using Safari with all your Chrome data. Passwords will auto-fill when you visit websites, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Transferring your info over is super easy, and you won’t lose anything important making the browser switch. You can now enjoy Safari’s features without losing your saved passwords, history, or bookmarks from Chrome.
