Copilot Voice, Microsoft’s AI voice assistant, initially optimized for English, is now experimenting with support for multiple languages. This expansion aims to make Copilot a more versatile tool, potentially rivaling other AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. While the feature is still under development, it marks a significant step towards broader accessibility.
Microsoft released Copilot version 2 on October 1, 2024, introducing a personal assistant similar to Pi, created by Mustafa Suleyman. Copilot Voice, allowing direct voice interaction with the AI, was initially exclusive to regions like the United States and required a Copilot Pro subscription. However, in November 2024, Microsoft made Voice AI available to all users for free. In January 2025, testing began for multiple language support, with various popular languages now showing some functionality.
Even if the primary language in Copilot settings is set to a non-English language, Copilot might initially respond in English. However, if a user starts speaking in another language, Copilot adapts and responds in that language.
Utilizing Voice Input to Trigger Language Adaptation
The most reliable way to get Copilot Voice to respond in your desired language is to simply begin speaking to it in that language. Copilot is designed to detect the language you are using and respond accordingly.
Step 1: Open the Copilot application.
Step 2: Activate Voice mode by tapping the microphone icon.
Step 3: Speak to Copilot in your desired language.
Step 4: Copilot should detect your language and respond in the same language.
Configuring Language Settings Within Copilot
Another way to influence the language Copilot uses is to adjust the language settings. While not always immediately effective, this setting informs Copilot of your preferred language.
Step 1: Open the Copilot application.
Step 2: Navigate to the settings menu. This may be represented by a gear icon or a similar symbol.
Step 3: Look for a language setting.
Step 4: Select your preferred language from the available options.
Step 5: Restart Copilot for the changes to take effect.
Microsoft is reportedly testing Copilot Voice support for languages like Spanish and Portuguese, with promising results. Copilot can understand and speak a wide variety of languages and plans to add support for more “optimized” languages in the future.
In addition to languages, Microsoft also intends to add support for different voices. Currently, Copilot offers four voice options: Wave
, Meadow
, Grove
, and Canyon
. More options may be added in the future.
Copilot’s expanded language support and voice options position it as a strong contender against other AI tools.
