Mentioning People and Linking Files in Google Docs

Did you know you can use the “@” symbol in Google Docs to quickly mention collaborators, link to files, and even insert calendar events? It’s a really handy way to keep everything connected. Here’s how to make the most of it:

First, make sure you’re using an updated version of Google Chrome and that you’re logged into your Google account.

  1. Open a Google Doc, either a new one or an existing one.

  2. Place your cursor where you want to add a mention or link and type “@”. A menu of smart chip options will pop up automatically.

Method 1: Mentioning people

  1. Type the name or email of the person you want to mention after the “@” symbol. Google Docs will show suggestions as you type. Pick the correct person from the list.

  2. When you hover your mouse over the mentioned name, you’ll see their contact details and other information like their position and location.

Method 2: Linking files from Google Drive

  1. To link a file, start typing its name after the “@” symbol. A list of matching files from your Google Drive will appear. Select the file you want to include in the doc.

  2. Hover over the linked file, and you’ll get a preview, so you don’t need to open the file to see its content.

You can link any kind of file stored in your Google Drive, including docs, sheets, presentations, pictures, and videos.

Clicking the file link opens it in a new tab, where you can view or edit it.

Method 3: Adding Calendar Events

  1. To add a calendar event, type the event’s name after the “@” symbol. Select the event from the suggestions that appear.

Using the “@” symbol in Google Docs can help you work more efficiently by quickly mentioning team members, linking needed files, and adding calendar events right into your documents.
