Pop-ups, while often annoying, aren’t always bad. Sometimes, they’re crucial for websites to function correctly. Think about banking sites, which frequently use pop-ups for statements, or online testing platforms which need them for exams. It might not be ideal design, but it’s how some sites work.
If you’re on your iPhone, you’ve probably noticed that some sites don’t load right, and that’s likely due to the built-in pop-up blocker. While we appreciate the protection from those pesky pop-ups normally, sometimes they’re needed.
Whether you’re using Safari or another browser like Chrome, you’ll need to disable the pop-up blocker to allow these sites to work properly. Luckily, it’s a quick and easy process. You can also re-enable it just as easily when you’re done.
Method 1: Allow pop-ups for specific websites in Chrome
Chrome offers the flexibility of allowing pop-ups for specific sites. This is more convenient than disabling pop-ups entirely and allows for better control over your browsing experience.
When a pop-up is blocked on a site, you’ll see a ‘Pop-up blocked’ message at the bottom of your screen. Tap this message and then select ‘Always Allow’ to permit pop-ups on that particular site.
While this feature is helpful, it might not always appear. In these cases, you can always disable the pop-up blocker entirely.
Method 2: Disabling pop-up blocker in Chrome entirely
You can turn off Chrome’s pop-up blocker from the browser’s settings. Here’s how:
- Open the Chrome app on your iPhone, and tap the ‘More options’ icon (three dots) in the bottom right.
- Tap ‘Settings’ in the menu that appears.
- Scroll down and tap ‘Content Settings’.
- Select ‘Block Pop-ups’.
- Disable the ‘Block Pop-ups’ toggle to enable pop-ups on all websites.
- Tap ‘Done’. Reload the page for the changes to work.
Method 3: Disabling pop-up blocker in Safari
If you use Safari, here’s how to disable its pop-up blocker. Keep in mind you can’t disable pop-ups for specific sites like you can on a computer. It’s either all or nothing.
-
Start by opening the Settings app on your iPhone.
-
Scroll down and tap on ‘Safari’.
- In the Safari settings, find the ‘Block Pop-ups’ option and turn the toggle off.
-
Go back to Safari and reload the site that wasn’t working. It should now function correctly.
-
When you’re finished, you can turn the pop-up blocker back on in the same way by enabling the toggle for ‘Block Pop-ups’.
Pop-ups can be a hassle, especially on a phone screen. That’s why browsers on iPhones block them by default. But it’s good to know that they make it easy to turn off when needed.
