Fixing Google Chat Connection Issues

Having trouble getting Google Chat to connect? You might see an “Unable to connect to chat” error. Usually, this happens because of old site data or cookies messing things up. Clearing that stuff often fixes it fast.

Method 1: Clearing Google Chat Data in Chrome

  1. First, head over to chat.google.com in your Chrome browser. Then, look for the lock icon on the left side of the address bar and give it a click.

  2. A dropdown menu will appear. At the bottom, you’ll see Site settings. Click on that.

  3. A new tab for settings will open. Find the Usage section and click the Clear data button. This will get rid of all stored data for Google Chat.

  4. A little confirmation box will pop up. Just click Clear to confirm that you want to delete this data.

  5. After clearing, the Usage section should show “No usage data”. That means it’s all gone!


Method 2: Deleting Google Chat Cookies and Cache in Edge

  1. Start by opening chat.google.com in Microsoft Edge. Similar to Chrome, click the lock icon at the start of the address bar.

  2. In the box that appears, you’ll see “Permissions for this site”. Click on Cookies under that section.

  3. The “Cookies in use” dialog will now be open. You will see a list of sites. Select google.com, and then click Remove. Do this for each site listed, including chat.google.com and contacts.google.com. Once done, click Done.

Method 3: Clearing All Cookies and Cache in Edge

Sometimes just removing cookies for Google Chat isn’t enough and you might need to clear everything for all websites in Edge.

  1. In Edge, click the three dots in the top-right corner.

  2. From the menu, find and click Settings.

  3. On the settings page, find the Privacy, search, and services option in the left sidebar and click on it.

  4. Scroll down until you see the Clear browsing data section and then click Choose what to clear.

  5. In the “Clear browsing data” box, choose your Time range from the dropdown. Make sure that Cookies and other site data and Cached images and files are both checked. Click Clear now.


After clearing this data, you’ll have to log back into Google Chat. But this should resolve that annoying “Unable to connect to chat” error.
