Enabling and using link previews in Google Chrome

Google Chrome continues to evolve with new features that enhance browsing efficiency. One such feature is Link Preview, which allows users to get a sneak peek of webpages by hovering over links. While this feature is automatically enabled in Chrome Canary, you can activate it in the stable version too. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Launch Chrome and enter chrome://flags in the address bar, then hit Enter.

  1. On the Chrome flags page, use the search box at the top to look for preview.

  1. Find the Link Preview option and click the dropdown menu next to it. Change the setting from ‘Default’ to ‘Enabled’. You can also choose ‘Enabled Alt + Click’, ‘Enabled Alt + Hover’, or ‘Enabled Long Press’ based on your preference.

  1. After making your selection, click the ‘Relaunch’ button in the bottom right corner to restart Chrome and apply the changes.

  1. Once Chrome restarts, visit a webpage with links. To see a preview, hold down the Alt key and move your cursor over a link. Alternatively, right-click on a link and select ‘Preview link’ from the context menu.

Important considerations

  • The Link Preview feature may be unstable and doesn’t currently work on macOS or touch devices.
  • Preview window size adapts to your Chrome window size but will always be smaller.
  • You can’t manually resize the preview window or use it for videos or games, but you can move it around and continue scrolling on the main page.
  • Only one link preview can be open at a time. Close the current preview before opening another.
  • If you decide you don’t want to use Link Preview, you can disable it by following the same steps and setting it to ‘Disabled’.
