Want to spice up your Google Docs with different fonts? The default options are okay, but sometimes you need something more unique. Here’s how you can easily add new fonts, making your documents stand out!
Method 1: Using the Extensis Fonts Add-on
If you want a super easy way to access a huge selection of fonts without adding them one by one, the ‘Extensis Fonts’ add-on is the way to go. It basically gives you the whole Google Fonts library right inside Google Docs.
- First, you’ll need to install the ‘Extensis Fonts’ add-on. Head over to the Google Workspace Marketplace and search for ‘Extensis Fonts’, or just use this direct link.
- Click the ‘Install’ button on the add-on page to start the install.
- A popup will ask for permission. Click ‘CONTINUE’ to move forward.
- Choose the Google account you want to use with the add-on.
- Now it’ll ask for permissions. Scroll down and click ‘Allow’ to let the add-on do its thing.
- You’ll get a confirmation that it’s installed, telling you where to find it in Google Docs. Click ‘NEXT’ to go to the next step.
- Finally, click ‘DONE’ to finish up the setup.
Enabling the Extensis Fonts Add-On
After installation, you need to turn it on within Google Docs:
- Open a Google Docs document (or refresh if you already have one open). Click ‘Add-ons’ in the top menu.
- Go to ‘Extensis Fonts’, and click ‘Start’ to activate it.
- The ‘Extensis Fonts’ panel should now be visible on the right, with all the available fonts. Just scroll through and click the font you like to use it in your doc!
Method 2: Using the Built-In Font Option
Google Docs has a built-in way to add fonts from the Google Fonts library. It’s pretty straightforward too.
- Open your Google Doc and click on the font name in the toolbar. This will open the font selection menu.
- Click the ‘More fonts’ option at the top of the font menu to access the whole Google Fonts library.
- Browse through the fonts in the dialog box. Click the fonts you want to add. They’ll be highlighted in blue, with a checkmark, and will appear under ‘My fonts’.
- Click ‘OK’ at the bottom-left to add them to your font list.
- The fonts you’ve added are now available in the font dropdown menu. They’re sorted alphabetically, so you can find them easily.
- You can also filter the fonts. Click on the ‘Scripts’ menu to pick fonts from a specific language, like Greek or Latin.
- Use the ‘Show’ dropdown to filter by font style (like handwriting, monospace, serif, etc) and ‘Sort’ to arrange them by popularity, name, etc.
Using Fonts on Mobile
Adding fonts on mobile isn’t directly supported in the Google Docs app. But don’t worry, any fonts you’ve added on your computer will work on your mobile device too!
- To use fonts you’ve added, open the doc in the Google Docs app and tap the pencil icon at the bottom to edit.
- Tap the ‘A’ icon at the top to get to text formatting options.
- Tap on the font name. You’ll see your custom fonts in the list.
- Select the font you want. Tap the back arrow (or outside the menu) to return to the document, and you’re all set!
Uploading Custom Fonts
Unfortunately, Google Docs doesn’t let you upload custom fonts from your computer. It’s all cloud-based, so you’re limited to the Google Fonts library. But hey, Google provides a massive library for most styling needs!
